It's frequently shallow and intellectually dishonest but it is also much easier to think in simple Manichean terms of tribal identity and demonize "the other" than to apply critical thinking to a wide range of issues, many of which frequently aren't amenable to such simple good/evil framings.

And as we are often reminded by the more extreme partisan kossacks, this site is devoted to an overtly partisan agenda; its very raison d'être is in fact partisan and while this viewpoint is presumably useful for maintaining tribal group cohesion, it also favors that shallow tribalism over deeper or more nuanced analysis and debate of issues and policy.  One can easily find examples here of calls to shut off discussion whenever the tribal boundaries become blurred or the discussion of policy strays across the neatly defined partisan divide.

That to me is the single greatest weakness of this site as a discussion forum- its deliberate prioritization of tribalistic partisan self-identification over a free exchange on ideological and policy issues.  That tribalistic prioritization becomes ugliest when the hardcore partisans use the HR system to attempt to shut off debate that doesn't neatly fit within their fixed preconceptions of what constitutes acceptable partisan advocacy.

Advisors for President-Elect Barack Obama feared the new administration would face a coup if it prosecuted Bush-era war crimes, according to a new report out this morning.

I have a strong, partisan, preference for Democratic approaches to policy issues. It does not require me to conclude that all Republicans are evil incarnate, hell-bent on destroying the country.

from a bright young conservative: “I’m watching my first GOP debate…and WE SOUND LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE!!!!”
