I know I learned more about life in five years at a public university than I ever learned in thirteen years of private school, some of which cost nearly as much per year as my college, I am embarrassed to say. Sure, I learned some interesting stuff and graduated high school somewhat ahead of the curve, but I was totally socially inept. I was completely in the dark on how to deal with people who were different than me, and I had never made any really strong friendships while I was in high school. It took a year of "shock treatment" in my freshman year at college just to start getting my head screwed on straight, and another year to actually start solidifying some friendships.

I might send my future kids to private school, or possibly even home school them, for high school, but for elementary school and possibly junior high they're going public. The socialization you get there is vital; it's something I never had, and it crippled for years. And even if I do home school them, I'm still going to have them participate in sports and music through the public school system. My kids are going to be smart both socially and intellectually.
