    In the Army during WWII, assigned to a unit that made training and morale films in Culver City.  Given that his eyesight was extraordinarily poor and he had lost a considerable amount of his hearing after a prop gun was fired too close to his head, getting into the Army probably took a lot of effort on his part.  I would assume he also lost a good deal of salary into the bargain.  For someone who could have sat out the war years as a legitimate 4F, that's commendable.  And IIRC, it was a calvary unit, though they didn't engage in any horseriding during his time in service.
