  •  Reddit is crazy. (0+ / 0-)

They are going to turn off their website to make a protest? What if they can't get it back up again? You don't mess around with your website when you are a web-based company, it is potential suicide. Crazy.

    •  It's not a turn-off (6+ / 0-)

They're not just going to go 404 & disappear. As I mentioned in the diary, they're putting up an anti-SOPA message in place of their usual activity.

      But seriously, which is crazier:

      1. taking a few hours of downtime, or
      2. doing nothing, letting the site get permanently shut down & losing everything?

they're just replacing the content that gets displayed for 12 hours, every single site on the Internet is risking its very existence whenever they need an extended 'we are fooling with the servers and/or the code at the moment' redirect downtime.

So NaNoWriMo's parent group was risking the existence of that site whenever they had to take the site off temporarily a very few times in late October and November due to the sheer amount of server load and trying to accommodate said load.

So was Dreamwidth the last time they had to add a webserver on short notice to users.

So is DailyKos every time ct does an update that can't run with users adding stuff to the database at the same time.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
