  •  And, of course, there are cases like Nurse Kelley. (8+ / 0-)

Thousands of dollars and months of pain and suffering simply because some doctors have come to see themselves as being some sort of 'healthcare conveyor belt' that looks for the simplest possible imaginable solution for a given problem, rather than having the luxury to take the time to do comprehensive studies of patient problems and keep at it until they actually figure out what's going on.

My father has lived with pain along his diaphragm for years, which periodically gets him sent to the ER with difficulty breathing, where it's always evaluated for 'chest pain' (ie, is he having a heart attack), then a few other tests done, then pain pills given, then him sent home without anything ever being figured out.

My housemate has any number of health  problems that have persisted for multiple years, resulting in scores of office visits, that always seem to come back to 'we don't know why, but take pain meds' and go away until things get bad again.

How much money is this country squandering on health care simply because we try to 'cheap out' time and again, taking the least possible time and spending the least possible money to treat the symptoms at hand, over and over and over, rather than taking the time and spending the money up front to work on preventative lifestyle changes and thorough examinations, and keeping at it until a resolution is reached?
