  •  People do care. Polls show it. (0+ / 0-)

It is a significant concern for a sizeable and growing segment of the population.

Just not on the top 10 for "today" or "right now".

Polls like those sited here end up biasing towards the urgent and downplay the important - even in what people think is important (not just what we think they should think.)

But the more intense the urgency of the issues that have to be addressed "right now" the less we're going to be inclined to focus on any long term issue (and here's the big idea) unless that long term issue is being pressed relentlessly by powerful interests.

Take for example the "long term debt crisis".

If as much money and resources were being spent on 'global climate change' as is being spent to sell that little 'crisis', can you imagine what the general public might do in prioritizing their 'urgent' issues.

If a soveriegn debt crisis or the sustainability of a government program over a 75 year time-frame can be made into a popular issue, anything can.

And if Congress can ignore the will of 66% to 80%+ of the American people who say taxes on the rich should be raised and Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security benefits should not be subject to significant (if any) cuts, then lack of a popular groundswell supporting an issue cannot be the excuse.

Someone in a very expensive suit is at the front door and says he wants to foreclose on our democracy. Where should I tell him he can put his robosigning pen?
