    I enjoyed your article on the piracy ecosystem:) However, I think it's a mistake to assume that piracy is primarily driven by profit.

    After all, the P2P program Napster was the Pirate Bay of its day - and there was absolutely no monetization involved at all. It's also my understanding that those in "the scene" - the people supplying the content to blogs and torrent sites - generally don't make any money in the process.

    Instead, I'd argue that people pirate because the technology enables them to do so, and the Google ads and affiliate programs are more a byproduct of the process than the cause of it.

    The focus on the distribution hubs is what leads to solutions like SOPA/PIPA, which are premised around the notion that if you can simply shut down the current infrastructure, that piracy will stop.

    What many of us opposed to SOPA fear is that this will have the impact of crippling many legitimate sites and handing the government a powerful tool for censorship, while piracy simply morphs into another form as it has in the past.
