    except for addicts, of course.

    Taxing staple foods is lousy, as is taxing poor people's income. If you've gotta tax sales, you might as well tax things you'd prefer for people to not have too much of.

      ....but singling out any group for specific taxation based on some arbitrarily defined "sin" makes a hypocrite and a predator out of every would-be progressive in my opinion.  I neither smoke nor drink but would still rather see my own tax burden increase if the alternative is preying upon human weaknesses to fill budget holes, and adding insult to injury by cherry-picking the given "sins" based on their public popularity (i.e. carving out exemptions for beer and pushing for tax cuts rather than increases for that product).
