  •  But that inflection point (0+ / 0-)

The so called "Reagan Democrats" who jumped ship for racist reasons, the "Southern Strategy" (created by Herbert Hoover, BTW) meant older voters switched to voting for racism instead of the middle class. Can there be no way to switch them back? Or is it truly a one-way street?

Compassionate Conservatism is letting all the bridges collapse so you won't have to live under one after losing your home when they cut off your unemployment insurance.

    •  I think it's a generational thing (0+ / 0-)

Reagan converted a generation of mostly middle-aged to younger people to his cause.  These days that group has moved into the late adult/senior category.  I suppose some of that group can be won over by attacking the right for their supporting ending Medicare and Social Security, but even that's a tough sell.  These are people who buy almost every right-wing talking point and see "Obamacare" as something that will somehow destroy the entire healthcare system.

    •  Oh, yes (0+ / 0-)

but they have to be desperate, it seems.

2008 made them desperate. Quite a few of them did vote for Obama in spite least in the Midwest
