  •  Great quote (in your sig) (0+ / 0-)

And it got me to look up Ian MacDonald and his work.  Sounds like I should start by reading The Broken Land, from which this quote comes, or?????

    •  No, that's advanced McDonald (0+ / 0-)

I'd begin with his debut novel, Desolation Road, then move on to Evolution's Shore. Definitely read Scissors Cut Paper Wrap Stone and Sacrifice of Fools if you can find them (the former is rare, the latter published only in the United Kingdom). Only once you've gotten used to his obsession with freaky biotechnology should you tackle The Broken Land.

Steer clear of Terminal Café and Ares Express, his two unfortunate clunkers.

"The great lie of democracy, its essential paradox, is that democracy is the first to be sacrificed when its security is at risk. Every state is totalitarian at heart; there are no ends to the cruelty it will go to to protect itself." -- Ian McDonald
