  •  It's not that war is not hell (26+ / 0-)

Precisely because war is hell, armies must emphasize discipline. Pissing on bodies is a first step toward Mai Lai.

But I remember at least one story that I think matches that title, so I think I know what you're driving at. And that supports my point. If an army loses discipline it becomes a terrible thing. The first responsibility of officers is to maintain discipline. Incidents like this one show a breakdown in discipline.

And an army without discipline is not only a terrible thing, it is less successful at carrying out the putative mission of an army - finding and killing the actual enemy.

          so it's hard to link

For those who dont know what I'm talking about google " the kill team rolling stone"

It barely got covered. Frankly I'm surprised that this received more coverage than that. Maybe because pissing on corpses is easier to talk about than killing teenage civilians for sport ant taking their pinkies as mementos.

But yes, I totally agree with you...this is how it starts. Also agree with your point downthread that it is cowardly to simply condemn them and not consider things like training, and the devastating impact that ten years of combat has on the men and women we send to fight our wars. There is a conversation we need to have about that but it will never happen because of entrenched partisans like kristol
