and needless to day the "regressive" represents the RW position well.

Progressive taxation often must be considered as part of an overall system since tax codes have many interdependent variables. For example, when refundable tax credits and other tax incentives are included across the entire income spectrum, the United States has the most progressive income tax code among its peer nations; although its overall income tax rates are below the OECD average

    •  But If You Track the Concentration of Wealth (3+ / 0-)

it's been fatally regregressive under all Admins and congresses since Carter. I don't know that we ever had time to sort out whether 70% top marginal rates, and the various other higher tax rates, were high enough for the large middle class to be sustainable long term. We certainly proved that the rates below that haven't been.

Democracy can't survive a class of rich who are this rich and hold such a large share of net worth.

In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

    •  Actually, it's called a progressive tax because (0+ / 0-)

it rises more quickly than linear with income.

This is why it's correct to say that SS benefits are regressive with average contribution (which is "progressive" in the meaning you intend). It means that the benefits rise more slowly than linearly with contribution.
