  •  We already tried this in 2010. (3+ / 0-)

"Don't give em back the keys!" "Move forward, not backward." "Remember Bush!"

That flopped. It flopped because the people already had their reckoning with Bush in 2008.

The message that works is the message that OWS has proven: The problem with the economy is that the 99% aren't getting their fair share. That's it in a nutshell. "We are the 99%." It is simple,it works, and its true.

    •  I think that's a false conclusion (8+ / 0-)

Saying that's the reason for the losses in 2010 is purely speculative and ignores the complacency of Democratic voters only two years after our big win.  2010 was very predictable in terms of who was motivated to show up to the polls.

Just saying we should forget about the legacy of Bush while the GOP is still pushing the same disastrous policies seems like a big mistake to me.  Pointing to specific things that Romney proposes and saying, "Yes, that's what Bush did and here's what happened..." seems like a pretty good idea.  The dynamics of this presidential election are very different than what happened in the midterms of 2010.

And, of course, you're correct that the 99% framing that OWS has done so much to create is helpful.  Obama can't run as the Occupy candidate or anything but showing that he's closer to righteousness in that regard than the gopers is definitely a good thing and will move the debate in the right direction.

I just don't think these things are mutually exclusive.  The modern GOP is the party of George W Bush until they're forced to change.  They haven't changed a bit.  If anything, they're making the argument that the only thing Bush did wrong was not being George W Bushy enough.

He should hang around their neck like a millstone.

When the truth is only a matter of opinion, advantage goes to the liars.

    •  oh, i agree with that too (3+ / 0-)

      Very much so.

Romney fails with the fairness question. The reason it resonates so much is because people are basically fair.

      That's why they blame Bush.
