In the GOP, paying less in taxes and making lots of money is a GOOD THING...paying less in church taxes is VERY BAD.

The far right is part of the constituency that he needs to get and energize and a light collection plate could spell bad news.

Mitt obviously has a big problem with seeming to be phony, insincere, two-faced, whatever you want to call it.

Given his roles as a bishop and stake leader in the LDS Church, if it turns out that he has "only" donated 5 or 6 percent of his income to the church, then it's another huge example of his "authenticity problem".

On the other hand, if Mitt has paid X dollars in taxes but donated 2X dollars to the church, it might raise the hackles of the xenophobes (a core GOP constituency) and get them to thinking that Mitt's allegiance to his church is stronger than his allegiance to his country.  No doubt there are many xenophobes lurking out there (maybe some of them vote in South Carolina) who put the Scary Mormon Guy in the same category as the Scary Kenyan Guy.
