term "rent" as a technical economic concept.

It's the value of goods or services, beyond the cost of production, that is endowed by the exclusivity of of the product.

A good oil well produces value many times the cost of exploration, drilling and pumping. Economists call that value "rent". The recipients of that value are "rentiers".

The MPAA exists mainly to protect the rent value of entertainment products... by protecting their exclusivity.

Each work of cinema is, to them, an "oil well" that keeps on pumping revenue long after it's production costs have been recouped, with a tidy profit, or even an obscene profit.

Rentiers contribute nothing to the economy, they're just taxing the consumer because the law entitles them to do so.

middlemen.  For some reason, their take is not incorporated into the analysis of an economic system that's divided into producers and consumers.

Middlemen are parasites.  They take from both sides.
In a sense they compete with our public entities.  That's why the chamber of commerce which represents the interests of the middlemen are antagonistic towards any tax.  They perceive taxes as a reduction on their 'cut.'

We have a large class of people who are sustained at the middle.  They trade but, instead of moving goods from producer to consumer, they generate artificial scarcities so they can continue to pay the producer less and charge the consumer more.
In a sense, the creative destruction practiced by Romney and his ilk is part of the artificial scarcity creation process.  The parasite got rich and then they god greedy and killed the golden goose.
