Is the Hawaiian accent mostly just talking really slowly? I noticed that in Rep. Hirono's Senate announcement video, too. Soooooo slooooowly.

(No, I didn't listen to the whole thing--it's almost 17 minutes!--but she speaks much more naturally there.  Frankly, it doesn't make the "Equal Rights" video sound more sincere.)

      •  No Hawaiian accent detectable there (2+ / 0-)

She's just a noob at reading from a teleprompter and took the whole "public speaking should be slower than conversational speaking" thing from Speech 101 to the max.

You want an example of the local slang/accent, here you go, or just look for any other Hawaiian pidgin video.  That example is fairly heavy but a lot of people in Hawaii talk somewhere between that and what is considered proper English.

and her sincerity that she has changed seems fake to me. If I legitimately thought she had a change of heart, or even if I felt I could trust her to vote right for the sake of good politics, but not yet for me. But she is closer than she once was.

suspicious of the Gabbard family--and frankly, it's hard not to think of them as some kind of unit.  Gabbard's Finance Director, according to ndrmls10's link? Erika Tsuji.  Who used to be Mike Gabbard's Community Liason:

        http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/...

Gabbard's campaign manager? One Devin Bull--and who is he?  Apparently, he worked for or managed "Mike Gabbard's campaign...when he ran for the same U.S. Congressional seat that Tulsi Gabbard is currently running for."  And, allegedly, he "was a hard-core 'Gabbardite', who worked for Stop Promoting Homosexuality Hawaii, the Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, and Hawaii's Future Today, which were among Hawaii's most bigoted and hate-spewing organizations over the last 20 years."

        http://www.civilbeat.com/...

        http://forum.rickross.com/...

Yes, I'm linking to blog comments--but they check out so far.  Bull did work for Mike Gabbard:

        http://www.pacifichistory.net/...

And Bull does seem to have been on a "committee appointed to recommend how the Department of Education could protect gay students from harassment".  Sounds good, right?

But Devin Bull, a committee member, called the recommendation a fake report because the full committee has never reached consensus.

"Their agenda is to teach homosexuality in the schools," Bull said.

        http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/...

And he does seem to be her campaign manager:

After Civil Beat posted the item (scroll down, please) about an online petition circulating to urge EMILY’s List to reconsider its support for Tulsi Gabbard, her campaign manager, Devin Bull, emailed “information regarding Tulsi’s stance on progressive issues.”

        http://hawaii.politics.government.blogs.civilbeat.com/...

Believe me, I don't like to imply that a young woman running for office is necessarily tied to her father.  But I've also found a fair amount of overlap between Tulsi Gabbard's donors and Mike Gabbard's donors in their respective Congressional races.  And at least two of her major campaign staffers worked for her father.

So how much of the rest of her campaign organization comes from her father's organization?  And if she wins, how much of her Congressional staff will come from that same organization?  Because the same guy who once accused a Board of Education committee of trying to teach gayness in the schools is now the guy Tulsi Gabbard has e-mailing reporters some shit about her socially-progressive views.  And that makes me suspicious.

I guess.  Maybe it's just a common name.

(Note: Maybe I'll make this into a diary.)

"LGBT" or anything like that anywhere in that video.  Except when she referred to me and my friends.

But I don't think I have seen a more physically attractive female candidate running for office in the US, ever. This could be one of the cases where sex appeal might make a substantial difference.

in the service of our nation." Sounds like volunteering for battle in the infantry or something. Serving in Congress is rarely fatal, though admittedly, after the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Giffords, that's not a funny joke - but still. Has Gabbard served in the military?

where she experienced the reactions of those in the Middle East who are not accustomed to a woman in a responsible military position?

Having been to Kuwait (as a civilian), I do understand what she meant, and thus felt more inclined to believe her than others here. When I walked around Kuwait City a couple of years after Desert Storm, it was not hard to spot the high-caliber bullet holes; the stories that I heard from colleagues there were quite consistent with the suffering of civilians in other wars.

I remember reading that statement; someone linked to it.

I forget a lot of the stuff I read here until someone reminds me about it. Not sure what that means about me.
