On the Internet, nobody knows if you're a dog... but everybody knows if you're a jackass.

    •  Which includes controlling what other people (6+ / 0-)

can do with material they themselves own outright.

If it becomes financially and legally untenable to allow for used-generated content, there's suddenly going to be a lot higher financial bar to getting anything up online, even if the poster can absolutely prove rights.

Dreamwidth, one of the many spin-offs from LJ's public codebase, already has problems finding companies that will handle their subscription transactions because of some of the Terms Of Use.

What happens to sites like Daily Kos if the transaction management companies were to start not bothering to do business with anyone who allows links in user-generated content, or even any user-generated content at all, on a call that such a policy was easier to police than dealing with constant requests from potential rights-holders and counter-requests from potential false report victims?

And that's not looking at the costs involved in monitoring what user-generated content was still allowed...

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
