    We are accustomed to having overextended copyrights. We would have to have a national discussion about that to change it.

    Regarding SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN, the real issue being raised is how copyrights (new and old) are protected from overseas. The MPAA and the RIAA want SOPA/PIPA because it would make it easier and faster for them to take down pirated material. The authors of OPEN, however, are trying to find a balance between freedom of speech and copyright protections. The International Trade Commission is independent and has experience dealing with pirated intellectual property through Section 337. OPEN supporters want to Expand the ITC's powers in Section 337 regarding digital material. This would be the alternative to using the courts and the Department of Justice as SOPA and PIPA would intend.
