These debates exist for four purposes:

    1) To activate the GOP/conservative base -- to feed them the GOP flavor red meat they crave.

    2) Probably most importantly, to raise money for the various candidates -- and to give them cheaper access to the most voters in the primary/caucus states

    3) To raise money for the Party as a whole -- when they sell these affairs to the networks

    and

    4)  To boost ratings and revenues for friendlier networks.

None of these purposes are served by having debates on MSNBC, which has a very different viewing audience.

The only reason to have an MSNBC was simply to say they did -- to head off arguments like the one the diarist is making.

While it's possible that the GOP might fear tougher questions from MSNBC, mostly they probably just don't want conservatives to have their own ideas challenged --- and they don't want to confer credibility on MSNBC...don't want their followers to get too familiar with the network.
