  •  It's not picking bits and pieces, unless (0+ / 0-)

you've defined the religion as everything anyone's ever said, every line of scripture, everything that anyone's ever believed.   That's not the way religions work.  It's like saying that you're cherrypicking what it means to be an American by abandoning slaveowning as a right.  Calling it cherrypicking makes sense only if you believe that there's a defined and unchangeable set of beliefs and practices.

Newt's not a conservative. It's just that conservatives assume that someone so mean and hateful has to be one of their true believers and not just an awful person.

    •  I gave you my understanding of the term (0+ / 0-)

The bible itself seems a reasonable collection of ideas from which to cherry-pick, and you cited a similar idea as cherry-picking:

a clause from a sacred book from a thousand years ago

If you're interested in redefining the term to protect the choices of believers, I suppose that's fine, but I have no use for such semantic games.

There is no belief, however foolish, that will not gather its faithful adherents who will defend it to the death. -- Isaac Asimov
