  •  Sorry, I'm not trying to be antagonistic (7+ / 0-)

just trying to understand the situation.

From my life experience, people I know who have opted for a career in the military are doing fine financially (much better than myself, who works in an university laboratory, but I'm not trying to turn this into a sour grapes situation, either).

From what I could see from the online charts (to get a better perspective than from just my acquaintances, who maybe just maybe are skewed to the upper end of the scale), after a decade or so the typical military pay is typically in the $60-$80K range.   Not really * that * bad (although, sure, civilian police work is MUCH more lucrative, but that's another issue I suppose).

And about those housing allowances  - the link is for California where they can vary for entry level personnel from about $900 to $2,400 a month.  Again, IMHO that's nothing to sneeze at (and something not really available in most other jobs!).

Maybe this all is more of a commentary on how bad all other jobs out there are rather than strong praise for military pay, but still, considering the job security angle and so forth, it just doesn't seem to be all that bad.
