    about 5 years ago, the only person I knew ho had any serious financial difficulties was an E-4 with 5 kids and a stay-at-home wife. And when I say "serious financial difficulties" I mean "had to live in the cheap neighbourhood, drive an older car, and bring his own lunch to work, and at the end of the month the family was eating a lot of beans and rice."

    I'm sorry, but there exists no civilian job (other than possibly self-employment) in the United States that can be obtained with a high school education and no additional training that allows you to support seven people on your salary within 3 years of starting. Military pay is fine, and any pay comparison that doesn't at least make an effort to include BAH and BAS is disingenuous. Those of us who are actually living close to the poverty line can spend up to 80% of our income on food and rent. Having those covered is huge.
