  •  How about an E-3 then? (10+ / 0-)

Or an E-4?  At what point do we get those salary levels up?

And exactly at what age or when is an enlisted person 'allowed' to start having a family?

The fact is that many of our young enlisted do have families and many of them rely on government assistance. I would like that to change. If we need to do that through education and convince more of them to wait to have families, great. If we need to raise salaries to give their families a fighting chance at the beginning, then lets do that. But whatever we do, we should do something.

And the more I think about it... I don't want to be the one to tell an 18 or 19 year old who is going off to war that he shouldn't marry his fiance or tell her that she shouldn't get pregnant before he deploys. I think unless we've walked a mile in their shoes, it isn't our place to tell them that they are wrong.

I find it fascinating that we can discuss who and when people "may" have babies.  My generation rarely had that choice and we also married younger.  Even today, folks get little "surprises", even with birth control.  Or is that a crazy old lady talking?

      Oh, for Pete's sake!

    •  Education...absolutely. This is actually something (0+ / 0-)

I became involved with during my husband's career on an individual basis. Speaking with young servicepeople regarding options available for financial planning..budgeting, etc..

I'll dismiss the comments regarding "allowing" people to have children because I haven't seen anyone here advocate not allowing young service people to become parents.

Wonders are many, but none so wonderful as man.
