    Agreed about influence, absolutely, but two things:

    1) Not on all the issues we hold dear.  Only the issues that the great bulk of internet users agree on, so influence on what Congress does to the internet.  Do you see promise for repealing DOMA if, say Google and Reddit got behind the effort?

    2) The stupid.  Here are the answers to a question -- "At what site can i sign a petition against PIPA and SOPA!? what website!? any could be safe!?" at Yahoo Answers.

        SOPA has actually been shelved by the creator, and PIPA has been delayed.However, you can here.

        Calling your representative though is the best way to get HEARD.

    That might present a problem unless the issue involved can be explained very very simply.

    All it takes is security in your own civil rights to make you complacent.
