Almost as many people went on food stamps during three years (less than one term) of President Obama as during eight years (two terms) of Bush?

Given that, trying to call Gingrich a liar based on this is kind of dealing in technicalities.  If Gingrich said, "more people have gone on food stamps during this President's term than during any other term in history," he'd be completely accurate.  To say, "well, President Obama hasn't quite, in his three years, overtaken what happened during President Bush's eight years" (essentially the point of this diary) isn't the strongest rebuttal, it seems to me.  Maybe the better issue is to discuss why it happened -- or, even more importantly, what to do about it.

There's so, so, so many things to address with Gingrich.  Trying to rebut this statement based on those numbers is not going to resonate with a lot of people.

facts and interpretation is pretty much a waste on this.  Newt would just love to have that kind of diversion.

However I we need to keep recognizing this statement for what it is: an open appeal to aggressive racism.

I've got a link to Coates below I think is well worth reading.
