I recall a lot of liberal bashing from Rush Limbaugh and his buddies in the 90s, and wasn't Newt also doing it?  At some point, it seemed to really pick up momentum.

You can't read the forums on my local paper's website without a few crazies blaming "liberals" for everything from garbage cans blowing out into the street to a rise in the price of canned corn.  These are not smart people, and they are only repeating the crap they hear.  It's time to call the other side on their anti liberal hate speech.

seems to pinpoint some of this stuff going back to the late 1970s. A certain kind of cantankerous "world's going to hell in a handbasket" sort of mentality, in which pointy-headed coastal elitists were to blame for most of the country's ills.

There's also a bit of it in what Barbara Ehrenreich calls "the discovery of the working class" -- that is, the realization on the part of the news media, in around 1970, that there was this exotic population called the "working class" that was irate about antiwar protestors, urban decline, and what they saw as the excesses of the civil rights movement and second wave feminism.

So the sentiment seems to go back a fair ways, even if the specific right-wing use of "liberal" as an epithet doesn't go back as far.
