    I once asked a friend why the Nationalist Chinese Army had been run so badly in the war against the Japanese, when better performance would have made a victory against Mao possible. He pointed out that it was because good officers and people with honor tended to end up out of the picture, and not because of some nefarious scheme either. It was just because doing the right thing -- refusing to enrich yourself through corruption, leading your troops from the front instead of from a bunker full of whores twenty miles behind the lines -- was very likely to end up with the good guys dead or disempowered, and the bad guys alive and well. She's done the right thing, true. But as a result, she might be replaced with someone lesser.
