    , and I do think there is legitimate room for debate on that issue on the left, I cannot agree with a campaign of intimidation to drive a group of people out of this country, which is what this "self-deportation" rhetoric appears to refer to. I am a liberal and a progressive because I hold equality and justice to be core moral values, and intentionally making immigrants' lives miserable runs counter to these values.

          If immigrants happen to be here without legal authorization, we should decide as a society to give them amnesty or to give them a speedy trial, and if found guilty of illegal entry, a speedy deportation without a long stay in a detention center. Likewise, we should decide as a society how many legal immigrants we want to welcome in. But whatever we decide, we must have a policy that provides justice, not systemic harassment.
