  •  That's a pretty good analysis, and I'm often (0+ / 0-)

very surprised at otherwise liberal, free thinking people who want to ban abortion.

OTOH, a lot of that is the way it's been framed as the murder of a child. Add in that medical science has pushed the age of sustainable life back as far as 26 weeks (ie., neonatal units can sustain a child taken from the womb as early as 26 weeks into the pregnancy), which is about a third of a full term pregnancy.

When Justice Blackmun wrote the decision for Roe v Wade, premature births  weren't sustainable much beyond a week or two early.

It's my belief the liberal/progressive community needs to do some rethinking on this subject, as well as the conservative side. Niether extreme position is really warranted now, as conditions have changed.  The best solution is still to prevent unintended pregnancy, which requires education and access to birth control.

And as we've seen, even that is under attack now.

      26 weeks is closer to TWO-thirds of a full term pregnancy. That's 6 to 6 1/2 months.

Viability will probably never be pushed much farther back than that, simply because development is insufficient at earlier stages. (Well, not unless the wilder SF speculations of works like Brave New World and Cyteen come to pas and it is possible to build fully functional artificial wombs. But that's not gonna happen any time in the foreseeable future.)

is pushed by the anti-sex people in an effort to get the moderates to support their candidates.

There is a lot of pictures of cute babies (ever notice that the younger the fetus talked about the older the baby pictured?) and little factoids that build a fantasy image of perfect little babies doing nothing more than expanding in size as well as a focus on the earliest preemie to survive and to treat that as 'viability.' It's like asking how long a fall one can survive, one shouldn't take the extreme as your standard  of measure.

The problem is that the medical realities of pregnancy are not much talked about. When talking yo pro-life people I hear a disturbing amount of ignorance ranging from those who think the reasons women want to end a pregnancy are stretch marks and weight gain to those who say an ectopic pregnancy is not a pregnancy and abortion it is not an abortion and therefore all abortions should be banned.

And to second TheOtherMaven's point the earliest surviving preemie was 22 weeks after conception which on the doctors' charts would be exactly 6 months.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance. Terry Pratchett
