I just listened to a news announcement of the sentencing of one of the murderers of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters in the notorious home invasion in Connecticut. The announcer noted that Mrs. Hawke-Petit had been raped and one of the daughters molested.

    Molested?

If we (English Speakers) are going to use a special term to refer to the sexual assault of a child, why would we choose one that minimizes and trivializes the crime? Below is the definition of "molest" from Merriam Websters, one that's common to most, if not virtually all, English dictionaries:

1: to annoy, disturb, or persecute especially with hostile intent or injurious effect

2: to make annoying sexual advances to; especially: to force physical and usually sexual contact on

The sexual assault of a child is more than a mere annoyance, more than merely disturbing. So, please join me today in an online campaign I've waged for almost 10 years now to STOP using the term "molest" when what we mean is "sexual assault of a child."

    Thanks.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

The only people who benefit from diminishing the harshness of the reality are the attackers.

        •  They call it fondling. How sick is that? (1+ / 0-)

If I hear someone refer to a child being sexually assaulted as 'fondled', I instinctively recoil, knowing that I'm hearing from an abuser or one of his enablers.
