  •  VA needs social workers who come to the home (1+ / 0-)

of the Vet and check up on them and see what their needs are and talk to them and help them make appointments.

My sister in law is VA as she was in the Navy in the 60s when she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was assigned a  local social worker, paid by the VA, but the social worker works for a private agency.  But the rest of her care is provided by the local VA clinic and transportation provided to the VA hospital by van several days per week.

We are lucky, our experience with the VA has been good. But then again, her mental illness has been her main issue plus a few medical issues. She has this social worker checking her once per week at her apartment and she has a Payee assigned to pay her bills and help her budget money.  She also never had a substance abuse problem.

I think because she is schizophrenic and sees mostly the psychiatrist and not a therapist , she does well as her condition is treated almost only by meds. The trick over the years is getting the Right meds.
