    for the libertarian mindset...

I remember, not very many years ago, we have a California initiative to make it illegal to make horse into meat fit for human consumption.  The voter guides are always required to offer short FOR and AGAINST arguments for the proposition.  The AGAINST side was so beautiful.  It said, and I'm paraphrasing badly: "So what if it's horse meat?  What if somebody really wants to eat a horse?  What difference is it to you?  We should be free to eat anything we want!"

That persuaded me and I voted against it.  I love animals, love horses, but, shit, if I want to get high and ride a motorcycle au naturel while eating teriyaki horse jerky, who the fuck's business is it?

And there's the appeal!  Either you feel it or you don't.

agriculture and deals with welfare issues, banning horse slaughter in the US has done more damage to the general welfare of horses than any other legislation.
Horses all over the US are being abandoned and starved because people can't afford to feed them, and can't sell them. Out west here, the drought has made the cost of hay rise precipitously, over $150 for one round bale that last year was half the price.
You can go to the few auctions around here that are still running, and buy a well bred registered quarter horse for less than $500, people practically beg you to take them off their hands.
And the worst of the bunch are still being slaughtered, they're just being transported to Mexico where there are no welfare standards for slaughter.
So no, I have no problem with people who want to eat horse meat.
