    Mainstream news sources refer to the commission recommendations all the time; front-page posts here have often harped on the fact that the commission actually failed.

    More to the point, his creation of the commission had a negative impact precisely because all those news sources refer to the Simpson-Bowles proposal as if the full commission had recommended it. It barely matters that it actually failed.

    Besides, you know as well as I do that the President was pounding the drums for deficit reduction for over a year. No-one forced him to do that, and that is what is at the heart of the criticism of him over budget issues. The commission should never have been formed to begin with. In doing so, he set the terms of the debate so that we were never discussing whether to balance the budget when unemployment is still catastrophically high, but how.

    In short, I sense you only see the posts you want to see, and not the ones where the outrage is actually well-grounded and sensibly argued. Which isn't to say that's all of them.
