      Galley slaves were whoever they captured when sacking this or that population, or capturing another boat or fleet.  

      I think the diarist is confusing two different kinds of slavery here.  There was nothing inherently racist about galley slaves, or making a metaphor to galley slaves.

      Linking to a news article is journalism in the same sense that putting a Big Mac on a paper plate is cooking.
