  •  Great diary. I had to honor to know one.... (17+ / 0-)

of the members of the 442nd.  George was a patient in my cardiac rehab program.  I have to say that George embodied most of our better stereotypes of Japanese culture - soft spoken, self-effacing, hard working, profoundly patient and gentle.  It was hard to picture him as a warrior.  He didn't mind talking about his war experiences, but was more interested in talking about tomatoes.  Wanting to know his history better, I got a copy of the book "Honor by Fire", which chronicles the history of the 442nd and its sister unit the 100th Battalion.  Amazing stories.  Senator  Inouye's Medal of Honor citation is quoted in there and is a pretty harrowing story all in itself.
For anyone in or visiting California, I highly recommend a visit to Manzanar - one of the camps, located on Hwy. 395 on the eastern Sierra near Lonepine, that has been turned into a historical monument and park.  Fascinating and historic exhibits.
