  •  He has his reasons (9+ / 0-)

As I said further down, Bill Bichsel actually is perfectly happy at the prospect of dying a martyr. The difference, I think, is that he is martyring himself in the cause of something good, and that he doesn't try to bring other people down with him in his martyrdom.

He broke into that nuclear facility to prove a couple of points. One of them, I think, is that the United States has allowed itself to be consumed with paranoia. Another is to protest the inherent wrongness of the huge number of atomic weapons we have (we could destroy the entire world a couple times over with what we've got alone; add in the Russians and everybody else, would probably destroy the whole solar system).

It should be noted that Bill Bichsel is a Jesuit of the old school, a social justice, liberation theology man down to his bones. He has been at this for decades, and will continue at it until he meets his death. He is willing to pay the price and bear the burden to show people that what this country is doing is morally wrong.

Frankly, I think we need more people like him. It's rare to find people who are willing to sacrifice their own lives for justice in a non-violent manner.
