They're the ones who rammed through the C&C laws in many states, and now have all the C&C permits.  Want to pick that kind of fight?  How's it working out for government opponents in Syria? or Iran?  Or, non-Hans in China?

      of which you speak?

You just made my case for me - small arms against combined arms is worse than useless.

      Which I doubt...

They may have the C&C permits but that doesn't mean they actually know how to use their weapons. Among that crowd owning a gun is a status symbol much like owning the biggest SUV. They've never really ever used it for its intended purpose and they wouldn't know how if they needed to. Besides once it gets to that level it's not going to matter much who has a permit and who doesn't.

that weapon to use it, they probably haven't ever cleaned it - and it will break and back fire.  Plenty don't know how to use the guns and ammunition they have been stocking up on.  I find that folks that own guns that do not know how to use them properly, are far more dangerous to themselves and the innocent that surround them.  Better had they never bought one.

My crazy BIL thinks that ammunition will be currency soon.  I suggested that food with a long shelf life would likely make better currency.  Food and water are so much more valuable than guns and ammunition.  He thinks he can, 'live off the land', but has no seed to grow anything.  He apparently thinks that everyone can just go into the woods and shoot deer.  There aren't enough deer to make that possible.  Besides, a diet with no vegetables or fruit in it is terrible for you.  I own my shotgun for one specific purpose.  To keep crazy, armed, hungry idiots from taking my valuable food and seed from me at gunpoint.  I would be happy to share my food with hungry people though, provided they don't threaten me for it.

When I plan for some sort of breakdown of society, I include the idea that I may need to feed several people.  This is why I continue to grow food in my front and back yards.  I'm even increasing the number of planter boxes.  I keep enough new seed in my refrigerator to grow several seasons - and it's non-Monsanto/GMO seed, so it will make more seed that is viable.  I already save about $3,000 a year on produce.  My neighbors already trade their own produce with me each season.  My barter system is already active.

and already have, in a way.
I doubt either of us could truly survive a full life span if we were suddenly to be bereft of all that civilization has to offer, but this course of action is many times better than buying guns and waiting for marauding bands to challenge us for our deer jerky.
Gotta love that barter system, eh? My "price" for my neighbor's eggs is the same as it was four years ago when we started it; one medium sized pile of kitchen waste for the chickens to eat.

Bok Choy, Broccoli, Turnips, Onions & Cabbage is a swap for a bag of Limes, Lemons, Potatoes and snap beans.

I have done the math though, and it shows that to feed a family of four each year, you would need at least five acres of land - and a good source of fertilizer.  And that's a very conservative estimate in which the bare minimum of calories is provided - with a full complement of the right proteins to survive.  The best full set of protein I can come up with is Potatoes or Yams combined with Black Turtle beans (which dry on the vine and are stored like any dry type of beans.  Growing rice is not feasible on small scale gardens, and the only decent grain you can grow that you can mill & cook easily is Oats.  So potatoes/yams + beans.  But then you also need plenty of Vitamin C, and Vitamin B, and various minerals.  Fruit helps with that.

For me to just feed my Wife and I, I would have to use every available horizontal ground surface around my house, with two growing seasons each year.  Compost is good fertilizer but is limited.  I wouldn't be able to let parts of the garden lie fallow for long.

It takes a lot of space to grow the food that feeds America.  It takes plenty of water.  It requires clean air.

Survival requires far, far more than just a gun and a few emergency rations.  It requires cooperation and help.  They don't think beyond the first week or two of some breakdown of society.  They never think in terms of being able to make food, they just think in terms of survival at the cost of no survival for others.  Stealing dwindling resources instead of making more.

I'll bet none of them thinks about what they will use in place of toilet paper when there isn't any ;).

I would love to see one of those oh-so popular doomsday scenario movies, where folks get together afterward and build sustainable agricultural communities.  It's usually some version of Mad Max in which everyone is out to murder everyone else for their miniscule resources.  Happy endings are so much nicer.
