    Depression-era law you mentioned. I did some searching, found this reference, but no more. I knew of  the anti-semitism of some senior government officials which caused ships carrying Jews to a safe haven to be denied entry, and of the internment of Japanese-Canadians.

    Rising racist opposition to immigration in the late 1920s would have forced modifications, but the Great Depression of the 1930s put a virtual halt to migration to Canada. In the early 1930s, many previously landed were deported as either indigents or subversives. The late 1930s also saw the notorious barring of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. During the Second World War racism reached new heights, with the mass removal of the Japanese-Canadian population of the West Coast to camps in the interior, and a plan, never implemented, to deport the entire community to Japan at war's end.
