When you go third party, you become a pariah within your party, especially if you contribute to an Obama landslide and loss of the House.  And, the Republican party, where loyalty and deference are expected virtues, would be even more unforgiving than the Democrats.  The money also goes away, for a very long time, if not forever.  Newt likes money.

Newt won't run third party, and he won't actively hurt Romney during the campaign (just as Hillary didn't do it to Obama).  In fact, as soon as it's apparent he can't win, he'll get out and start to rebuild his financial pipeline.  Third Party is just death a sentance (see:  Ralph Nader and Ross Perot), and Newt needs the money and connections far more than he wants revenge.

Besides, deep down, he has to know that virtually everything Romney has said about him is true.
