and the "high crime and misdemeanor" in impeachment is whatever the House says it is. Impeachment is not, as you claim, confined to criminal offenses with due process in the criminal justice system. Impeachment & conviction is, and always has been, a political process, not a judicial one.

So your (1) and (2) follow from a mistaken understanding of the process.

I forget the exact case, but there was a federal judge that they tried to impeach for political reasons shortly after the Constitution was signed. It fell flat on its face and set up the precedent that impeach should be for actual crimes, not just "I dont like your politics". But there is no legal definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors". Hell, a misdemeanor could be a traffic violation or jaywalking.

But I'm saying that we don't have a tradition in this country of impeaching elected officials that we just don't agree with. This isn't a parliamentary system where we can force a no confidence vote if the prime minister looks at us the wrong way

Republicans respect the traditions regarding impeachment, or in their radicalism, ignore them.
