  •  Brave, posting that here. Why? (11+ / 0-)

I myself have a little bit of money, nothing like what you describe but we're in the top 5%.  However, I've been cautious about talking about it here.  As if, because I'm not suffering financially during this period, I'm not part of the 99% and can't possibly understand. Yet, when I look at my associates and how they blather on about taxes (and not wanting to pay them) I have to give myself a pat on the back.  My son, who recently started listening to NPR, asked me one day:  why do you vote for democrats when they're for higher taxes?  I explained I want a strong country with health care and quality education for all, parks and clean lakes, economic fairness, bridges and roads that aren't falling apart, and I do believe that it is the responsibility of those who have to assist those that don't and that government, with all it's warts, is the most expedient and accountable way to do that. Yes, we must have oversight and root out fraud and waste, but I don't mind paying higher taxes if it means one life can be saved or improved as long as people still have incentive to work hard.  Balance is the key.  "So", he asked after the lecture:  "you and Dad should probably vote republican because of your income, but you're voting democratic even though it means you'll pay higher taxes".  Yep. It's the patriotic thing to do!

Got Social Security? Thank a Democrat!
