    I retired last year under FERS and do get a federal pension in addition to anything I saved under the fed 401k look-alike (TSP). Five years and you're vested (see http://www.opm.gov/...).  FERS annuity doesn't pay as much as CSRS, but those people don't pay into SS and don't get those benefits.

      you retired under FERS? How many years?

      I've done the calculation, it's an annuity. Oh, wait, I did taxes and CSRS, when I looked at their forms (depending on year of retirement) said PENSION. pension and annuity, are you saying they are the same thing? I don't have a choice about the FERS money I pay into, or SSA. I do when it comes to TSP. I am very jealous of the CSRS folks I meet at work who just care about "high three" and accumulating sick leave so they can extend their retirement out months to years, FERS cannot.
