  •  Honestly if I ran the GOP I would (0+ / 0-)

basically give up on the white house and focus on keeping the house and winning the senate.

During the next 4 years spend time grooming a perfect GOP candidate and use Obama as a foil because in the end he would be forced to work with us.

At this point Mittens is just getting by on his PAC's and 10 years worth of campaigning.

Mittens will win because over 8-10 years he has built a ground game and knows the ropes of running for the nomination while all of his opponents are green noobs who have no money or ground game.

    •  I think the GOP has the same concern... (4+ / 0-)

...but the problem is that a weak presidential candidate will hurt their chances on down-ticket congressional races.

I worked during the 1984 presidential primaries campaign, and my sense is that the Democrats of that era took the same long-view approach when we nominated Mondale.

Reagan was very hard to beat and Mondale didn't really have a chance, but he was a good torch bearer for the party.   I think Hart was expected to be the golden boy to run and win in 1988...but then he self-destructed and we were left with Dukakis.

Republicans are in far worse shape--they don't have  decent Mondale or Gary Hart equivalents.
