  •  PTSD bites the big one. (6+ / 0-)

What we are doing to these mostly children is appalling and shameful.

Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.

that are causing the troops to want to call it quits permanently. We lie when we say we have "honor". There is no honor in war, there is no honor in watching civilians die, some of them our troops have killed or maimed or just wounded. There is no honor in watching your buddy cut up into little pieces as he rides beside you in a convoy. There is no honor in occupying another country just because it has a resource that our corporations want. There is no honor in going to war without the cause, the objectives, the definition of both of those not clearly spelled out. There is no honor in a war that has lasted over 10 years with no resolutions.

We lie when we say to the troops "We support you!" No we don't. We didn't give them enough armor to begin with, we paid contractors more than we paid the troops, we have not given them the "best" medical care. It is, but only in comparison to the care we give the lower class. In this case they may get to see a doctor whereas, the lower class only gets to see the emergency room and a nurse.

We lie when we call the folks who went to war in WWII "the Greatest Generation". These were folks who were just like all of us. Young kids without much of a future signing on, young kids feeling anger at Pearl Harbor and signing up, older men drafted and pulled into duty without their desire to do so. And some people wanting to be part of the effort, but turned away because they were 4F or women or Japanese or whatever flavor that wasn't wanted at the time, gave up sugar, gave up driving a car, collected scrap and gave as much as they could to the war efforts and bought bonds.

But this was not because they were great but because every effort the government could muster was out there pushing the war pushing the need for the war pushing the glory of the war.

The government hasn't done that as much with these wars, there is no draft, there is little in the way of movies promoting the war. But they haven't had to. People facing an uncertain future have signed up because they wanted to better themselves and give their families something and they felt that college would be affordable. We also have had the genuine warriors who are willing to stand for us, who have the innate honor that seeks what the lies have promised.

These people of today are just as great as those who fought in WWII. Perhaps even more so. There isn't a draft, there isn't the huge push of propaganda (I don't watch TV so I may be missing a bunch) and they are joining to make a better world for themselves and their families without all that.
