As a survivor of child sexual abuse, I can't tell you how relieved I am to see people actually talking about it - some being FORCED to talk about it, but at least it is in the public conversation.

When I was a child, it was NEVER talked about. And even after I reported it at age 13, it was never talked about again.  Too much shame, embarrassed the family, too uncomfortable...

We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.  There are sick people out there who are targeting our children today.  Teachers, coaches, family members/friends - no one is immune and we must do better.

    Thanks for your comment.

      of the article...

Mark Berndt, 61, was investigated in 1994 for allegedly trying to grope a 10-year-old girl in his class at Miramonte Elementary School in South Los Angeles, the Associated Press reported.

The girl claimed that the creep reached toward her crotch during class in September 1993, but she slapped his hand away, cops said.

The unidentified girl's mother complained to the school about four months after the alleged incident occurred.

The sheriff's department eventually sent the complaint to the L.A. district attorney, which declined to file charges.

The girl and her mother were not identified.

Reports of the investigation follow claims from two other former female students who were in fourth grade around the same time.

Marlene Truhillo, 30, and her former classmate, Nadine Martinez Rodriguez, told the Los Angeles Times that Berndt often moved his hands under his desk near his lap, and that other students had spotted a jar of Vaseline in his desk.

Both girls reported the odd behavior at the time, but weren't taken seriously by school officials or Rodriguez's parents.

Reported... but either not followed up, or kids were NOT believed their observations/complaint not investigated to the fullest.  This guy could have been stopped long ago.

      •  We MUST believe our children and act! (5+ / 0-)

        Proving Sexual Abuse
When sexual abuse occurs the child victim may be the only witness and the child’s statements may be the only evidence. In such cases, the central issue sometimes becomes whether the child’s statements can be trusted. Some child welfare experts feel that children never lie about sexual abuse and that their statements must always be believed. According to Douglas Besharov in The Future of Children (1994), “Potential reporters are not expected to determine the truth of a child’s statements. As a general rule, therefore, all doubts should be resolved in favor of making a report.” He continues, “A child who describes being sexually abused should be reported unless there is clear reason to disbelieve the statement.”

Child sexual abuse cases can be very difficult to prove largely because cases where definitive, objective evidence exists are the exception rather than the rule. The first indicators of sexual abuse may not be physical, but rather behavioral changes or abnormalities. Unfortunately, because it can be so difficult to accept that sexual abuse may be occurring, the adult may misinterpret the signals and feel that the child is merely being disobedient or insolent.

The reaction to the disclosure of abuse then becomes disbelief and rejection of the child’s statements.

        Roxine, 2thanks, kishik

a redux of Jerry Sandusky? Wasn't there a child and parent who reported erratic behavior but either weren't believed or there wasn't enough evidence back in the 1990s? If an investigation had gone on then, maybe it wouldn't have gotten to the point of McQueary seeing him in the shower and telling Paterno.
