Basically any politician who has a parent who was recently involved in politics will inherit a donor base. This was quite apparent for Rand Paul and even moreso for Weston Wamp. I'm definitely not rooting for Gabbard, but this doesn't say much to me.

Rand and Ron, and even moreso, Weston and Zach, share the same politics. Tulsi Gabbard has taken a lot of pains recently to stress that her politics are different from her father's. So why would her dad's old donors still be interested in her? Or, put another way, if they're the kind of people who liked her dad's politics, then why is she interested in them? Obviously the answer is money, but that doesn't exactly make me feel great. (And I'm not one who typically gets squeamish about money in politics.)

They could simply like the family, not just for political but for personal reasons. I imagine in some cases, they may be friends of her father and doing this as a personal favor. Or they may have met her through him and like her, regardless of some differences in their views.

They also might like some aspect of Mike Gabbard's politics other than his views on social issues--check out the Honolulu Magazine article I linked to in my previous diary for some discussion there.

As I've said, I don't pretend to know what this means--there are a number of possibilities, and as you say they aren't all sinister.

Even if her donors and staff are just personal and family friends, and therefore this doesn't necessarily imply anything about Tulsi Gabbard's own views or possible voting record, I still think it's at least notable how high a percentage of her fundraising and staff come from that.  I imagine its unusual for virtually all of a candidate's staff to be their relatives or have worked for their father, even for a dynastic candidate.

As MichaelNY and I said, there might well be innocuous answers to the questions you ask--but I think they're legitimate questions to ask.

Some dynastic candidates run as (much as I hate this phrase) "brand extensions" of their families.  Everyone knew Rand Paul was Ron Paul's son, and what that probably meant about Rand's politics--in fact, as far as I know, he was running as a libertarian-unorthodox conservative in his father's mold, and, as far as I know, that's the kind of Senator he became.

Tulsi Gabbard is very much not running as a candidate in her father's mode--she mentions her father only in passing.  I don't know if there are any pictures on her website of her and her father or her mother.  But her campaign gives every indication of being a family operation.  I have no idea what that means about her views or potential voting record, but I think it's, at least, worth keeping track of.

And remember, I was pretty restrictive--I limited myself to people who donated to Mike Gabbard as a Republican as well as Tulsi Gabbard.
