    cancer stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) with ESCs. ESCs are baseline precursors of more differentiated cells, and they have the "correct" genetic regulation networks, epigenetic states, and cell surface markers.

    When we study cancer stem cells or iPSCs we need to be able to compare them with "normal" stem cells -- i.e. ESCs.
