    To accuse the opponent of what one has done oneself.  It works because the opponent is left incredulous and unable to respond and it takes the issue "off the table" for the defendant.  The response that, as is true in this case, the proponent was a spendthrift, can be characterized as just revenge--tit for tat and not worth much.  
    False accusations serve to diffuse an issue.  That's what worked so well for Bush junior when his people attacked Kerry's military career.  It distracted from Bush's cowardice and going AWOL.  
    Putting one's weaknesses out there is called "getting ahead of the curve," I think.
