Or are some despotic governments more tyrannical than others?

which military aid is a part, is inconsistent then I certainly agree. This diary, however, is concerned with the current tension between the US and Egypt.

      •  What did u expect in Egypt? (0+ / 0-)

You had a very religious majority tempered by a strongman.

Remove the strongman and that majority will do whatever it needs to attain and conserve power.

During the cold war many Republicans used the USSR to gain power.  Why are we surprised when others use the US?

        •  I would say that it is important to distinguish (6+ / 0-)

between the SCAF still ruling the country (for whom protecting their economic fiefdom is far, far, far more important than the lip-service they pay to religion) and the new-found "power" of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the Salafist al-Nour Party in Parliament, the real power of which remains unclear.

It's hard not to think that there are other geopolitical concerns when the days of blank checks are over for certain countries and not for others whose military and/or non-military ruling elite act in equally despicable ways.
