angle gives me pause as well.

Slightly OT, but there was an interesting interview with Wael Ghonin on WNYC this morning, where he said that he was supporting domestic NGOs and even starting one of his own to help in education.

    •  Not to hijack this really fascinating (5+ / 0-)

conversation, but even with domestic NGOs, wouldn't one have to follow the money?  This is nothing about Wael Ghonin, but there's a long CIA history of setting up domestic companies, NGOs, etc. that are a front for other concerns, to be very bland about it.

      •  No, not a hijack at all, and your point is (3+ / 0-)

well taken. I think I am operating from the assumption that domestic funding is easier to trail; but the significant point is having a transparent funding process. There have been quite a few NGOs that I would have supported given their stated objectives, but having found out about their funders, I am no longer willing to support them.

Its probably different in different countries, but domestic NGOs in my country tend to either have secular funding or religious supremacy funding and the NGO's purpose makes pretty clear what exactly are they working for. So education and help for widows and orphans can be pretty catch-all, or even relief for earthquakes and floods, but a little bit of digging makes quite clear that the NGOs are working in a discriminatory manner, and so they don't get my money.
